New data study proves BLUEFUME® full efficacy for structural fumigation

  • Full-scale fumigation trial using BLUEFUME® at a six-story grain mill in Gorj County, Romania, delivers 100% mortality of Tribolium confusum larvae and adults.
  • The study [1] highlights BLUEFUME®’s performance under real-world conditions, despite structural complexity and minor gas leakage.
  • Results further confirm BLUEFUME® as a powerful, fast-acting alternative to traditional fumigants such as phosphine and methyl bromide.

Hydrogen cyanide-based fumigant BLUEFUME® has proven its efficacy in the field during a large-scale trial at a wheat mill in Târgu Jiu, Romania. Researchers recorded complete mortality of all adult and larval Tribolium confusum — one of the most damaging pests in stored grain environments.

The study, conducted in June 2024 by AXIVEN, a pest control organisation in Romania, in collaboration with the University of Craiova, utilised BLUEFUME® (hydrogen cyanide) — a fumigant product of Draslovka. The five-day fumigation took place in a complex, six-story brick facility. Despite wind conditions and minor sealing challenges that caused concentration levels to fall below target thresholds, BLUEFUME® performed consistently across all monitored sampling points. A total of 22 bioassay containers confirmed 100% kill rates for both larvae and adults.

The trial adds to BLUEFUME®’s growing body of global field evidence, with previous applications in Germany, Belgium, France, Australia, South Africa, Malaysia, and now Romania. The fumigant has become increasingly relevant as the agricultural and food sectors seek replacements for restricted products like methyl bromide and increasingly ineffective solutions like phosphine.

BLUEFUME® offers key advantages:

  • Fast-acting — lethal doses reached all insect stages within 24 hours.
  • Environmentally progressive — positioned as a non-greenhouse fumigant.
  • Practical for real-world conditions — effective even in imperfect sealing environments.
  • Effective against resistant pest species — such as Tribolium confusum.

Egg-stage mortality was not fully measured in this study, and researchers recommend follow-up investigations to optimise treatment durations for full life cycle control. However, the results clearly reinforce BLUEFUME®‘s potential as a reliable, high-performance structural fumigant for grain mills and food processing facilities.

Commenting on the results, Adam Trocha, Product Manager BLUEFUME® stated:

“This study confirms what we’ve seen in trials around the world — BLUEFUME® works, even in the kinds of conditions applicators face in real life. It’s fast, effective, and gives the industry a real, sustainable alternative when it matters most.”

With phosphine resistance growing and environmental regulations tightening, BLUEFUME® is well-positioned to support a new era of safer, more efficient pest control in post-harvest environments.
